Women for Election Urges Voters to #VoteWomen in Tomorrow’s Local and European Elections
Women for Election is calling on voters across the country to actively support women candidates tomorrow by researching the candidates running in their area and considering voting for the women running.
Women for Election have a map-based tool to help voters see who’s running in the Local Elections in their area: www.votewomen.ie
“Glass ceilings are being broken. More women than ever before are running in the Local Elections in a major milestone for Irish democracy. Voters across the country will have the opportunity to change the face of local government tomorrow”, said Brian Sheehan, CEO of Women for Election.
Ireland currently ranks 103rd in the world for women’s representation in national politics and ranks sixth lowest in the EU for the number of women in local politics. Women make up 50% of the population but just one in four of current Councilors are women. There are currently no women Councilors in 41 of the 166 Local Electoral Areas that make up the 31 City and County Councils across the country.
“Despite all the challenges over the past few months and years, more women than ever before have decided to put themselves forward to better our democracy. Now the opportunity to make a real progressive change for Irish society is in the hands of the electorate.” Sheehan continued.
Women for Election are asking people to research the women candidates in their communities and consider giving women No. 1 or high preference votes in tomorrow’s vote.
“We encourage voters to visit our comprehensive database at www.votewomen.ie to research the women candidates running in their local areas. This platform provides detailed profiles and information to help you make an informed decision and support female leadership at the local level”, concluded Sheehan.
