36 women TDs were elected in General Election 2020. One additional woman was elected in a by-election in 2021. The total of 37 women in the Dáil – 23% – places Ireland 103rd in the world in the number of women in national parliaments.

There are currently four women in the 15-member Government – the Cabinet. There have never been more than four women in the Cabinet. The first woman was Constance Markievicz in 1919. It took 60 years to get the second women – Máire Geoghegan Quinn in 1979 as Minister for the Gaeltacht.
Women for Election have called on all parties to commit to a minimum of 40% women and 40% men in Cabinet after the upcoming General Election.

After decades of stagnation in the number of women in the Dáil, candidate gender quotas of 30% women and 30% men was introduced in 2012, for the 2016 General Election. There was an immediate rise in the number of women candidates and of women elected. The candidate quotas go to 40% for the upcoming General Election.
